Sidney Ragland is currently a senior at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. Mr. Ragland is a student of Cesar Ulloa.
In March 2012, Mr. Ragland performed the role of Ferrando in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Opera Theatre, under the baton of Maestro Giuseppe Finzi. In the summer of 2012, he performed the role of Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni with the Bay Area Summer Opera Theatre Institute (BASOTI) under the baton of Maestro Matthias Kuntzsch. In 2011, he performed the role of Arpad Laszlo in She Loves Me with San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Musical Theatre Department. In addition to full roles, Mr. Ragland’s partial roles include Tamino in The Magic Flute, Nanki-Poo in the Mikado, Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, Linfea in La Calisto, Egisto in L’Egisto, and Don Basilio in Le Nozze di Figaro. This summer of 2013, he will be participating in the International Vocal Arts Institute (IVAI) in Blacksburg, Virginia.
A Bay Area native, Sidney is a member of the St. Columba Gospel Choir at St. Columba Catholic Church in Oakland, CA. From 2008 to 2009, he attended the Young Musicians Program (YMP) at UC Berkeley, where he studied classical singing with James Meredith. Sidney started singing at the age of 13 and was a pupil of well-known Bay Area musician Janice Maxie-Reid, who started him off in singing. While singing at St. Columba, Sidney had engaged in numerous choir workshops, including the Rawn Harbor Workshop Choir Experience, under the direction of Rawn Harbor. In high school, he performed in several musical productions, including the role of Seymour Krelborn in Little Shop of Horrors and the Cowardly Lion in the Wizard of Oz. He has also appeared with Frederica von Stade on several occasions, including at Herbst Theatre in September 2012 for a San Francisco Performances Conference and at the Annual Young Musicians Program Donor’s Concert with the YMP’s Choral Youth Orchestra conducted by Maestro Anthony Parnther.
In addition to appearances, Sidney has also participated in some master classes, with singers such as Evelyn Lear, Michael Austin, Rodrick Dixon, and David Bender. He will also appear in an upcoming master class with John Churchwell in February 2013.
Mr. Ragland has been a finalist in several competitions, including the Pacific Musical Society Competition, East Bay Opera League Competition, and the Burlingame Music Club Competition.
Other interests include drawing, playing piano, cooking, dancing, traveling, and animals. Sidney plans on returning to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in fall 2013 to pursue his Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance with Cesar Ulloa.
